Four Wyoming Cowgirls scored in double figures, and they punished the Air Force Falcons 88-63 Wednesday night in Mountain West action at the Arena-Auditorium. The Cowgirls jumped to a 21-6 lead thanks to tough early defense and never looked back.

Cowgirl head coach Joe Legerski said, “Defensively we got off to a great start. Not only did we limit Air Force to one shot and out, but I thought we got a hand up on everything. Then we got into transition, but the big key tonight was being able to attack the press.”

Wyoming (21-6, 10-4) did attack in the first 20 minutes and led 40-14 by halftime. Despite getting out-scored in the second half 49-48, they were never seriously threatened. They allowed Air Force to only shoot 22.6 percent in the first period, which put the game out of reach for the Falcons. The Cowgirls tied a season-high with nine made 3-point field goals, and it marked the sixth time this season UW’s hit that magic number.

Kayla Woodward scored a game-high 22 points, Sickles had 16, Kaitlyn Mileto poured in 13 points and Chaundra Sewell added 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Cowgirls shot 52.4 percent (33-63) from the field, were 9-20 (45%) from deep and 13-16 (81.3%) at the stripe. They out-rebounded the Falcons 36-31, had 20 assists and only 8 turnovers.

Sickles said, “I thought we came out strong. We know they (Air Force) were gonna put up a fight through the whole game. They’ve really been battling in conference and doing pretty well. We said, it’s our home court, we’re gonna defend it, and just come out and start putting in some shots. Hopefully it flows from there.”

Air Force (4-22, 3-10) was led by Katie Hilbig with 17 points. They shot 45.2 percent (28-62) for the game, but were 1-6 (16.7%) from 3 and 6-9 (66.7%) at the foul line.

The Cowgirls return to action with their final home game of the season Saturday against New Mexico. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at the Double-A. You can listen to Cowgirl basketball on KOWB with coverage starting at 1:30 p.m.
