Cowboys Grind Past Fresno State, 72-66

Jerrad Anderson/Townsquare Media

Nathan Sobey scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Wyoming Cowboys past the Fresno State Bulldogs, 72-66, Tuesday night at the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie. The victory was overshadowed by an injury to junior forward Larry Nance, Jr.

Nance left the game with 14:51 remaining with a right knee injury.

Wyoming head coach Larry Shyatt said, “I don’t think it looks good,” in his post-game press-conference. Shyatt also said that an MRI is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

About 30 seconds after Nance’s injury, Sobey hit a pair of free throws that put the Pokes up 40-31. Fresno State came right back with nine straight points and tied the game at 40.

The Cowboys responded with seven straight and then held off every Bulldog challenge. Wyoming went 12-15 at the free line in the last 2:08 of the game.

The two teams combined for 69 free attempts and 49 fouls. UW was 33-44 at the stripe, while Fresno State was 21-25.

Sobey’s career-high came on 5-8 shooting from the floor. He was also 15-17 at the free throw line. He also had seven rebounds.

Nance was dominant before he left with the injury. He scored 17 points on 7-9 shooting in only 25 minutes. He scored 15 of the Cowboys 25 points in the first half.

Wyoming (17-9, 8-5) also got 10 points from Josh Adams.

Fresno State (13-14, 6-8) was led by Tyler Johnson’s 24 points. The loss snapped their five-game winning streak.

Next up for the Cowboys is the first edition of the Border War with rival Colorado State on February 22. The game is at 4 p.m. in Fort Collins, CO.
