The two-game win streak in Mountain West play was short-lived for the Wyoming Cowboys, as they got pasted by the Aztecs in San Diego Tuesday night, 79-51. Without their leading scorer and rebounder, Leonard Washington, the Pokes were no match for SDSU, who shot 68 percent in the game and built a 24-point lead by halftime.

After a respectable start, UW led 7-6 just over five minutes into the game. That’s when the Cowboys went cold and the Aztecs caught fire. San Diego State went on a 31-6 run over the final 14:48 of the first half for a 37-13 advantage at the break. Wyoming managed only four field goals the entire first period and shot less than 17 percent from the floor. The Pokes failed to get the game close in the second half, as the Aztecs extended to as much as a 31-point lead with 3:49 left.

UW head coach Larry Shyatt said, “Obviously tonight was a large disappointment. Compliments to San Diego State. They ran themselves better tonight than I saw them on tape at all this season. They are a pretty well-oiled machine here when they are hitting shots. They beat us in every way shape or form tonight and we were never able to dig in on defense.”

San Diego State (19-7, 7-5) was led by Jamaal Franklin with 20 points. Dwayne Polee II matched his career-high with 16 points, while Winston Shepard had 12 and JJ O’Brien scored 10. The Aztecs were 30-44 from the field, which included 6-12 from deep and 13-17 (76.5%) from the line. The out-rebounded UW 35-16 and scored 36 points in the paint compared to 16 for the Pokes.

Wyoming (18-8, 4-8) was led by Derrious Gilmore with 15 points, while Matt Sellers added a career-high 10 points. The Cowboys were 20-53 (37.7%) on field goals, 4-16 (25%) from 3-point range and 7-11 (63.6%) at the charity stripe.

Washington did not play after suffering an ankle injury late in the overtime win over Fresno State last Saturday.

The Cowboys return to the court on Saturday at home against the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. You can listen to Wyoming men’s basketball on Y95 Country, as coverage will start at 5 p.m.
