Josh Adams scored 28 points to the lead Wyoming Cowboys to a hard fought 81-78 victory over San Jose State on Adams’ Senior Night Wednesday in Laramie.

Adams got some help. He and freshman Jordan Naughton combined to score 21 of the last 23 points that helped UW pull out the victory.

The game featured 24 lead changes and 15 ties. Neither team led by more than six points. UW took the lead for good on an offensive rebound and put-back by Naughton with 5:46 remaining.

With the Pokes ahead 75-74, Adams drove the lane and dished to Naughton for a big slam dunk with 29.5 seconds left. Naughton and Alan Herndon both made one-of-two free throws, while Adams sank a pair in the final 14 seconds. Jason McManamen also took a key charge with 13.5 left.

In addition to his point total, Adams dished out six assists and grabbed four rebounds. Naughton finished with 11 points and a team-high six boards. McManamen scored 16, while Herndon added 11.

Wyoming (14-17, 7-11) shot 53 percent from the field. They went 26-of-38 at the foul line.

San Jose State (8-21, 3-14) had five players in double figures. They were led by Frank Rogers with 15 points and seven rebounds. The Spartans shot 46.6 percent from the floor and knocked down nine 3-pointers. They out-rebounded UW 33-30 and grabbed 13 offensive rebounds.

The Cowboys next action will be in the first round of the Mountain West Basketball Championships in Las Vegas. Who and when Wyoming will play is yet to be determined. The Pokes could be either the seven, eight or nine seed in the conference tournament. Their game time will be at either Noon or 2:30 p.m., Mountain Time next Wednesday, March 9.
