The Wyoming Cowboys and Cowgirls will compete in the Mountain West Championships for men's golf, women's golf and women's tennis this weekend.

Women's golf tees it up today through Saturday in Rancho Mirage, California. They'll play 54 holes at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club. Wyoming is one of nine teams competing. They finished eighth at last year's championships.

Cowgirls head coach Josey Stender says, "This group is very dedicated to the process that we've laid out together as a team. You can't really control whatever everyone else does... If we can just kind of stick to our own game, then you never know what can happen."

Wyoming is paired with Fresno State and New Mexico in the first round.

The 2014 Mountain West men's golf championship is at the Omni Tucson National Resort in Arizona Friday through Sunday. They'll play on the Catalina Course for the eighth consecutive year. All 11 teams from the conference will in the field. UW tied for seventh place a year ago.

Cowboys head coach Joe Jensen believes there are three elite teams in San Diego State, UNLV and New Mexico. He says "The rest of us, I feel like, we have a chance. We can compete against those teams. Now, obviously we have to play well, but throughout the year we've shown that we've been able to compete with those teams."

The Pokes are paired with Boise State and Utah State for the first round Friday.

Also tomorrow is the first match for the Wyoming Cowgirls in the 2014 Mountain West Women's Tennis Championships. The fifth seed Cowgirls will play fourth seed Boise State in the quarterfinal round at 11 a.m. Mountain Time.

Cowgirls head coach Dean Clower says, "The conference tournament always brings a different level of tennis; different styles; anything can happen. You know we just have to make sure we stay aggressive, and when we have those opportunities, we gotta go for it."

Wyoming defeated Boise State 5-2 during the regular season. That match was played in Laramie on April 11. This match will be at the Sierra Sport & Racquet Club in Fresno, California.
