Colorado Man Sentenced For Kicking Deputy

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A Colorado man charged with kicking a Laramie sheriff's deputy told his judge at a sentencing hearing that he grew up in a predominantly drunk home.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports that 53-year-old James Jeffery of Fort Collins acknowledged his criminal history on Friday and apologized for kicking the deputy in the face last summer.

His public defender told Laramie County District Judge Thomas Campbell that Jeffery began drinking alcohol as a 6-year-old.

Jeffery said he's been sober for the past year and wants to change his future.

Campbell accepted a suggestion from prosecutors that Jeffery serve a sentence of two-and-a-half to six years in prison, giving him just enough time to qualify for substance abuse treatment from the prison's Intensive Treatment Unit.
