LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — The University of Wyoming Dining Services is changing how it handles leftover food thanks to a group of students.

The excess food will now be given to the Laramie Soup Kitchen.

Samantha Brant and seven other students designed the plan for their community and public health class last fall. Once the class ended and the project was still in the works, Brant and the others continued developing a proposal as an internship. Donated food will include whole meals not eaten after a scheduled event or cafeteria lunchtime.

Brant tells the Laramie Boomerang that bags of food were being thrown away each day after events where people didn't show up or dining services wasn't planning to use certain foods.
