Cheyenne Police Chief Brian Kozak says a long-term drop in local crime seems to be continuing.

Kozak says 'part one' crimes--which include most of the most serious and violent crimes--decreased by 37 percent from 2010 to 2014.

He goes on to say crime rates for 2015 so far are running below 2014 levels in most categories, although he didn't cite any specific numbers on that. Kozak says he thinks partnerships between police and the general public have been a big help.

The  chief says events such as the annual ''Neighborhood Night Out", which he started in Cheyenne several years ago, have been a big help. He says such events are important because they let people get to know police officers.

He says another benefit is that neighbors get to know each other, helping identify who belongs in the area and who doesn't.
