Do you hear the outdoor warning sirens during their monthly tests?

If you are able to hear Cheyenne's outdoor warning sirens when they're tested on the first Friday of each month, then you are safer during a storm.

The outdoor warning sirens are tested each month on the first Friday at noon in Cheyenne and at 10 a.m. in Pine Bluffs. When you hear the wailing siren, which usually lasts about 1 to 3 minutes, it means you could be warned in the case of a real emergency.

During an actual emergency, residents should take cover immediately when they hear the sirens and tune in to local radio or television stations for emergency information. Most of the time, this would happen during severe thunderstorms or tornadoes but could be used to warn residents of any life threatening situation in the area.

In 2015, Laramie County installed 15 new sirens around the area, raising the total number to 64. Follow this outdoor warning sirens link to find out all of the new locations. At the official Laramie County Government website you can find answers to frequently asked questions about the outdoor warning system.

You may have also heard an Emergency Alert System test over the air on our stations. Each week, stations are required to test their alert systems which allows listeners to get familiar with their attention-getting sounds. When the storm clouds get dark and scary over Cheyenne, the outdoor warning sirens help lead us to safety. Do you know where you will take shelter?
