The Cheyenne office of the National Weather Service is warning people to get ready now for the expected arrival of winter weather in the area later this week.

Chad Hahn of the weather service says preparations should include a winter safety kit in your car as well as the knowledge of how to get the latest information on the weather and on travel conditions.

Hahn says the travel safety kit should include non-perishable food, water, essential medications, blankets, flashlights, extra warm clothing and a first-aid kit. Hahn also reminds travelers they can get the latest road and travel information in Wyoming by calling 511 or going online.

The latest weather information is in Cheyenne by calling the National Weather Service at 1-800-269-6220. Laramie County residents can also call Dayweather for the latest forecast at 632-5555.

Forecasters are expecting the first real winter weather of the fall to hit southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle on Thursday or Friday.

Exactly how severe the storm may be in the Cheyenne area isn't clear yet, but forecasters say there is the potential for strong winds, near zero windchills and blowing ad drifting snow along with poor visibility.
