Cheyenne Resident Mike Ceballos Running For Superintendent of Public Instruction

A retired business executive from Cheyenne is seeking to become the next state Superintendent of Public instruction. Democrat Mike Ceballos announced his candidacy on Tuesday. Ceballos served as Qwest Wyoming president for 14 years before retiring in 2011, and has been working on a doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of Wyoming.

Ceballos said he had long been interested in student success, but he found a passion for it when Gov. Jim Geringer, in his first term, asked him to serve as Wyoming’s business representative at a national education forum.

Ceballos' campaign will focus on three priorities:

1. Communicating the importance of parents, community organizations and citizens in improving the success of students through increased collaboration between the state and communities, including school districts.
2. Creating a common understanding of the knowledge and skills that students must possess to be successful in a global arena.
3. Increase instructional time by relieving educators of non-teaching duties.

Ceballos said he wants to help improve student success from the ground up–by working with communities and parents to find ways to support our schools at the grassroots level, not with a top-down state approach.
