We are always on the move, passing street names, not giving a thought as to how the names came to be. Those of us new to town might not know who or what it was named after. Have you ever wondered about the names of our city--Cheyenne?

Cheyenne is pronounced Shy-Ann and is the Dakota Sioux's name for the Cheyennes, believed to mean "Relatives of the Cree." The name of the town has been spelled in different ways through the years to include: Chyenne, Cheyanne and Sheyenne. But in their own native tongue, the Cheyenne call themselves Tsitsistas meaning "the people."

So if you are like me, and was pondering where the name of the capitol city came from, now you know the rest of the story.
