The Cheyenne Police Department is urging people to use the "next door" neighborhood website as a crime fighting tool.

The site allows people in various neighborhoods to share information.

Officer Dan Long says the site has the potential to serve as a ''virtual neighborhood watch program" by sharing information about crimes and suspicious people in specific areas of the city. Long also says police will use the site to post information about crimes in areas of the city and to alert residents.

While he says the police won't be able to monitor the site and people can share a variety of information besides crime alerts, he thinks it still has major crime fighting potential. Long says people can sign onto the next door website free of charge, adding it issues people in specific neighborhoods codes so that the information is restricted to people in that area.

But he says people who want to report crimes to police should continue to do so either by calling the department or posting information to the Cheyenne Police website.
