The Cheyenne Police Department is making an all out effort to catch motorists who run red lights, according to Officer Dan Long.

He says police aren't yet revealing exactly which intersections are being targeted, but says they are areas where there have been a lot of accidents caused by people running red lights. Police Chief Brain Kozak said earlier this year police had identified four intersections in the city for the enforcement effort.

Long says the entire Cheyenne Police Traffic Division, which consists of eight officers, is focusing on the intersections, although they are still looking for other violations as well.

Long says red light violations lead to some of the worst traffic accidents in the city, often involving ''T-Bone" collisions causing a lot of very serious or even fatal injuries.

He says there seem to be two main reasons why people run red lights--impatience and inattention.

As part of the enforcement effort, the fine for running a red light in Cheyenne was recently raised from $125 to $175. As recently as early 2014 the fine had only been $85.
