Cheyenne Police Department spokesman Officer Dan Long says the agency is taking steps to fight an increase in drug offenses in 2013.

While arrests for marijuana accounted for the biggest single category of drug offenses, with 295 compared to 237 in 2012, police are concerned about a 49 percent increase in methamphetamine cases.

That's because, according to Long, meth users are especially likely to commit other crimes, such as burglaries. The department's Community Action Team is employing a number of tactics to fight drug trafficking, including unmarked cars, surveillance, and foot patrols in the downtown area.

He also says the team investigates complaints of possible drug trafficking submitted by local residents.
