A spokesman for the Cheyenne Police Department is reminding city residents about the Neighborhood Speed Watch Program.

Officer Dan Long says the programs allows residents to check out police radar guns and use them in areas where they think a lot of motorists are breaking the speed limit.

The information collected by the radar guns is used by the police department to decide whether there is a speeding problem in a certain area, "or just the perception of a problem" that may not actually exist.

Long says police will also train people in how to use the radar guns. Long also says that while some people think anyone using a radar gun has to be visible to motorists, there actually is no such law on the books.

He says in general police target areas of the city that have high accident rates for special enforcement efforts.

However, he adds that if police get evidence of people speeding in other areas, they will watch those streets even if no accidents have been reported.
