The Cheyenne Police Department officially opened their new home in the Cheyenne Public Safety Building on Wednesday.

The department has actually been mostly operating out of the new building since last week and has been moving for the last month or so.

But the official Ribbon Ceremony, featuring Mayor Rick Kaysen, Fire&Rescue Chief Jim Martin, County Commissioner Linda Heath and other local dignitaries was held on Wednesday June 1 to mark a fresh start with the new month.

Cheyenne voters approved spending $25 million in sixth penny sales tax money to build the facility a few years ago, and city officials were able to come up with around $1.5 million more to complete the project.

Police spokesman Dan Long said on Wednesday that besides a much-improved appearence over the previous Police Department building on Capitol Avenue, the new Public Safety Building will improve police operations by allowing for better use of modern technology, including video recording systems and the wiring needed to support modern computer systems, among other things.
