The Cheyenne Police Department is working on a new policy for minor car accidents on private property.

The new policy, once implemented, will allow motorists involved in minor fender-benders to exchange insurance information without contacting police. The new policy will not apply to accidents involving serious injury or death, intoxicated drivers or other more serious offenses.

Long says the idea behind the new policy is to free up police for more serious matters. Cheyenne Police assisted with 785 minor accidents on private property last year, consuming a fair amount of time that could have been devoted to other police business.

Long stresses the new policy is not yet in effect, but says it is likely to be implemented in the near future.
