This isn't just a problem in Cheyenne, but the country as a whole have seen a reduction in participants in joining police forces across America. Here are some reasons why.Cheyenne Police Captain Mitch Maxwell said that participation in recruits has been down in Cheyenne. There are reasons for that, some of which include potential recruits being disqualified for various reasons.

According to Capt. Mitchell, the Cheyenne PD is allotted 106 slots for the force, but currently has 8 vacancies. Some of the challenges, in finding replacement personnel has to do with training that takes up to a year before placing a uniformed officer on the street. Other challenges include those who can't get past a background check.

In order to build qualified staff on the force, the Cheyenne Police Department is offering a signing bonus for lateral officers, or those who have been on the force in other cities and a $5000 signing bonus. This is all in an effort to bring the force up to full staff.

In all of this, Capt. Maxwell stated that they will maintain high standards for the protection of the citizens of Cheyenne as they move forward with new hire considerations.
