The Cheyenne Fire and Rescue Department is offering to provide and install smoke alarms to Cheyenne residents who qualify for the program.

According to Interim Fire Prevention Chief Byron Mathews, applicants must live in the city and meet at leas two of the following qualifications:

-Low to moderate income, according to Housing and Urban Development guidelines

-Senior Citizen

-Physically challenged

According to the National Fire Protection Association, almost  five million households across the U.S. do not have smoke alarms. Mathews says the alarms are the "first line of defense" against fatal house fires.
