A spokesman for the union representing local firefighters is warning people about a scam in which the caller claims to be selling advertising space at firefighters charity events and fire inspections.

Derek Pollnow, spokesman for the International Association of Firefighters Local 279 says neither the union nor Cheyenne Fire and Rescue ever try to sell advertising over the phone.

Union President Jon Bertsch says that while the union may ask for sponsors or donations through the course of the year, that is done through a personal visit..

Pollnow says the phony firefighter sometimes claims to be with a company called 'Fire House Promotions", which claims to have a contract with "the local fire department".

The calls appear to be coming from a Nebraska phone number. Pollnow reminds people to never give out personal financial information to anyone you don't know.

He also says if people are in doubt about whether someone is really a firefighter, they can always call Cheyenne Fire and Rescue to find out for sure.
