The union which represents Cheyenne firefighters on Friday issued the following statement on the news that Fire and Rescue Chief Jim Martin is leaving the department::

– “The Cheyenne Firefighters would like to congratulate Fire Chief James Martin on the announcement of his upcoming retirement. Chief Martin has not only served the citizens of Cheyenne for 31 years but was an active member of your Cheyenne Firefighters of IAFF local 279 for 25 years. It is for these contributions that we extend our gratitude and best wishes in his future endeavors. The Cheyenne Firefighters are extremely optimistic about what the future holds, not only in the search for a new fire chief but in the continued and progressive service that we are entrusted to provide to our great community. The Cheyenne Firefighters will strive to provide nothing but the very best service to our citizens through the collaborative effort of our city leaders and dedicated firefighters.”

On behalf of all of the Cheyenne Firefighters,

Jon Bertsch,

President, Cheyenne Firefighters IAFF Local 279

Cheyenne Mayor Marian Orr has announced that Tom Schingle will serve as interim fire chief effective March 1.
