Cheyenne Firefighters are gearing up for the annual "Fill the Boot'' fundraising drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

At a kickoff event on Tuesday morning at the Laramie County Library, Wyoming Governor Matt Mead, Cheyenne Mayor Marian Orr, Cheyenne Fire Chief Greg Hoggatt and other local dignitaries showed their support for the fundraising effort, which is an annual Labor Day Event across the United States.

Governor Mead said progress is being made in research into muscular dystrophy, which is actually not one disease but 43 different muscular diseases which afflict children and young people.

The governor said it's important to keep funding the research so that more progress can be made into finding a cure for muscular dystrophy.

Cheyenne Firefighters Public Relations Chairman Derek Pollnow said last year local firefighters raised $34,000, after setting a goal of $30,000.

He says this year's goal will be $30,001, with hopes of going well over that amount. Pollnow says firefighters will be out in locations across Cheyenne over the Labor Day weekend collecting the donations.
