Have you ever wanted to be a lifeguard?

Starting this weekend, the Cheyenne Family YMCA is offering a Lifeguard Certification Class from May 8th through the 10th and May 15th to the 17th.

If you are serious about becoming certified as a lifeguard, the Cheyenne Family YMCA will be offering the American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED classes for Professional Rescuers. Classes run Friday, May 8, to Sunday, May 10, and May 15 to May 17.

Course Candidates will become lifeguards by gaining the necessary skills needed to recognize, prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants must have a passing score of 80% or better on all exams and pass the final skill scenario to receive certifications. Here are some of the tasks participants will have to perform:

  • Must be able to tread water for 2 minutes non-stop without use of hands or arms.
  • Must be able to perform a surface dive 7 feet to retrieve a 10 pound brick and swim back holding the brick within a certain time limit.

The American Red Cross certifications are valid for two years. If all of the certification requirements are not met, certification will not be awarded and no refund will be given. Participants must attend every class.

The fee for the class is $120 for YMCA Members and $150 for non-members. For more information, call Christy at 307-634-9622, extension 14.
