Jim Zlomke, a biology teacher at Cheyenne East High School, was one of 18 educators from across the country who spent their summer break learning how to make a guitar.

Zlomke took part of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Guitar Building Institute at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. In the project, he learned how to craft an electric guitar from a piece of wood using techniques that he will now be able to pass along to his students.

Zlomke discussed the process in a recent interview published by the University of Wyoming website, saying, “The whole hands-on nature gets students excited and will get them to buy into it. They won’t even know they are learning science along the way.”

He plans to launch a similar project at Cheyenne East, possibly integrating the workshop into an after school program for science students. In the meantime, he has another goal for the upcoming school year...learning how to play his new guitar.
