Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities crews will shut down and drain Phase I of the Southern Water Main starting today. The shutdown is necessary for crews to begin constructing Phase II of the water main, according to Board of Public Utilities spokesman Clint Bassett.

Motorists along Happy Jack Road may notice water spraying from blow-off valves while the pipe drains. Draining the pipe may last several days. Construction crews expect to begin installing pipelines after Labor Day.

Phase I was constructed in 2008. Th of 2.5 miles of 42-inch transmission main from the Sherard Water Treatment Plant to Round Top Road. The second phase extends that transmission main 11.5 miles south under Interstate 80, east under Interstate 25 and connects to water distribution mains being installed at Parsley Boulevard and Walterscheid Boulevard.

The new 42-inch transmission main is needed to supplement flows, provide redundancy for existing transmission mains and meet water demands in the southern areas of Cheyenne.
