The Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities is again warning residents about the dangers of flushing sanitary wipes down the toilet.

Spokesman Clint Bassett says the problem is that wipes don't dissolve in sewers like toilet paper does. He says even wipes labeled as "flush-able" still cause sewers to back up.

Bassett says most of the wipes in the local sewer system eventually arrive in the waste water treatment plant, which processes water to be released into Crow Creek. Each day 780 pounds of waste must be removed from the water, with most of that consisting of wipes that have been flushed down the toilet.

Bassett also says the amount of wipes flushed into the local sewers forces BOPU crews to conduct frequent maintenance work on local sewers.

This is the second time this year the  BOPU has issued a wipe warning.
