Laramie County School District#1 Director of Instruction Marc LaHiff says that while he doesn't think schools are broken, "I think we can do better".

LaHiff says he is often asked about "broken schools" and what can be done to fix them. He says he thinks the perception of broken schools is driven in part because the role of education, and what people expect from schools, has changed dramatically.

LaHiff says today  every student is expected to graduate from high school and be ready for college or a career. By contrast he says in the past it was considered acceptable for many students to only complete the eighth grade.

LaHiff says he thinks ''systemic changes"  are necessary. He says the district has already been doing that in terms of curriculum, and now needs to look at time allocation and how instruction is focused.
