A spokeswoman for the Cheyenne Animal Shelter says the shelter is dealing with the spread of what she calls a " doggy cold".

Nicki Rose says the cough--known as shelter cough or kennel cough--is "nothing serious". She says the situation is much like a person who catches a cold and may take some medication to recover.

She says dogs at the shelter who are identified with the sickness are being quarantined and treated.

Rose says people who adopt dogs from the shelter don't need to take any special precautions because of the cough. She says being outdoors in the sunshine tends to kill off the germ that causes the cough
