His name was Dom Pedro II, emperor of Brazil. He crossed Wyoming on the Union Pacific. 

The year was 1876, and America was busy celebrating the centennial of the Declaration of Independence. Dom Pedro II, emperor of Brazil, was the first royalty to visit the new nation.

At the time Brazil was a monarchy with a parliament. They enjoyed many of the freedoms that America had fought for.

Dom Pedro II was on his way to Philadelphia the celebrate the 4th of July. He chose to see America along the way.

It was around midnight when Dom Pedro’s train passed through Cheyenne. While he would be awake to see much of his trip across Wyoming the was asleep when his train arrived in Cheyenne.

A reporter from a local paper was allowed to see the sleeping monarchic as he snored in his royal car during the brief refueling stop.
