An Albany County man accused of attacking and threatening his mother before a standoff with law enforcement in October was sentenced in Albany County District Court Tuesday.

Triston Baucom, 20, was sentenced to the Wyoming Youthful Offender Program, or boot camp, with an underlying sentence of not less than five years and not more than 10 years with credit for time served. Upon completion of the boot camp, Baucom would be subject to a period of intensive supervised probation.

As part of a plea deal, Baucom pleaded guilty to one of the charges against him – aggravated assault – attempts to cause serious bodily injury. In exchange for the guilty plea, the state dropped the other felony charge- domestic battery-as well as other misdemeanor charges against him. The state also recommended boot camp at the time of sentencing.

Baucom was arrested on October 10 after a nearly seven-hour standoff with Laramie law enforcement. According to court documents, Albany County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a woman being strangled by her adult son. The victim was able to get away and meet deputies in a safe location and told them that she and her son had been talking and he had become very angry and threatened to kill her.

The victim said she had tried to record the conversation with her phone, but Baucom took her phone from her and put it in the kitchen. When the victim tried to retrieve her phone, Baucom told her he was going to kill her and put his hands around her neck and applied pressure. The victim tried to fight Baucom off, at which point he bit her right hand and then tried to strangle her again, court documents state. Baucom then stopped attacking the victim and said that he was done hurting her for now. The victim grabbed her purse and fled the house.

Deputies tried multiple tactics to persuade Baucom to leave his residence, including talking to Baucom over PA speakers, but he would not leave his home. The Sheriff’s Department said after about seven hours and exhausting other options, chemical agents were used on the residence and Baucom evacuated the house within minutes. He was arrested by Laramie’s Special Response Team without injuries.

"Mr. Baucom, I wish you all the best in dealing with the issues that put you here today," District Judge Tori Kricken said during the sentencing.
