After a good rain or a wet snowfall, it's easy to experience flooding in your home or basement if you haven't prepared your home to avoid this experience.  Today on the Top 5 at 7:45, I'll highlight what experts are saying will help you protect your home and basements from the terrible damages of flooding.

  1. Clean Your Gutters - Dirty, leafy gutters can be one of the main problems for home floods. If the water is not flowing where it's supposed to, then you may have problems in your home.
  2. Gutter Spouts - Ensure that your gutter down spouts are positioned correctly. Make sure there are no holes or damage to the down spout, as this may cause the water to run down against your foundation and into the home.
  3. Build Higher - If you're going to build a home, and you know there is a lot of moisture and rain in the region, build your home on a higher elevation to avoid the affects of homes built in a flood plane area.
  4. Wet Proof - You can wet proof your home by installing vents in your foundation to allow the water to flow through the home rather than in the home.
  5. Dry Proof - You can do this by applying coatings to seal your walls to keep the water out.
