Academics to Wyoming: Reconsider Science Standards

(Laramie County School District #1)

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A group of Wyoming educators is asking the state board of education to reconsider its position on science standards.

The Wyoming Legislature and Gov. Matt Mead this year banned benchmarks known as the Next Generation Science Standards due to their stance on global climate change. A committee of about 30 teachers and administrators had endorsed the standards.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1p4TZ0Y ) that 46 current and former match and science educators at the University of Wyoming have sent a 36-page paper to the state board of education supporting the standards.

Board Chairman Ron Micheli said his stance has not changed regarding how climate change should be taught in Wyoming. He says science standards should recognize the benefits natural resource extraction have brought to Wyoming while also addressing its environmental impacts.
