A young girl is dead following a crash on Interstate 80 near Rock Springs Tuesday afternoon.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol says Heather Fletcher, 8, was killed in the crash that occurred at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday near mile post 97 on Interstate 80, about five miles west of Rock Springs. She was a passenger in a 1996 Ford Explorer driven by her father, 53-year-old Brian Fletcher of Rock Springs.

According to a Patrol news release, the Ford was eastbound on I-80 when it left the roadway to the south and collided with a section of box beam guardrail.

Heather Fletcher was sitting unrestrained on the center console area of the Explorer's front seat. She died at the scene, inside the cab of the SUV.

Another 8-year-old passenger who was unrestrained was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County in Rock Springs. She was treated and released.

Brian Fletcher was wearing his seatbelt. He was admitted to the same hospital.

Possible charges are pending as the Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

Driver impairment, fatigue and mechanical failure are all being examined as possible contributing factors in the crash. Heather Fletcher was the 40th person killed on Wyoming highways in 2016. The same period in 2015 saw 66 highway deaths statewide.
