A 50-year-old Rock Springs man is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond on a variety of charges, including attempted murder.

Sweetwater County Sheriff's Department spokesman Dick Blust says Steven Dean McLaren is charged with Attempt to Commit Murder in the Second Degree, Aggravated Assault and Battery, Kidnapping and Strangulation of  Household Member in addition to charges of driving with a suspended driver's license and DUI.

McLaren allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, Jennifer Evans, while she was a passenger in McLaren's vehicle on March 10. McLaren, among other things, allegedly tried to choke Evans and hit her in the head with a Maglite flashlight. McLaren is accused of pulling her back into the vehicle by the hair and refusing to allow her to leave the vehicle as she tried to escape.

He also is accused of trying to cause a head-on crash with another pickup at one point. She was eventually able to get away and was picked up by the driver of a semi. Blust says the case remains under investigation
