During this time of year, children are told about the mythological character "The Easter Bunny." But there is another mythological character in Wyoming called the Jackalope.

Wyoming is wild about the Jackalope. From the lottery, to Special Olympics in Laramie, to the Jackalope Jump in Gillette, and, of course, the Jackalope Mud Bog in Douglas, Wyoming.

Here are 5 places in the Cowboy State that celebrate the states mythological character, the Jackalope. Have you ever participated in a Jackalope event?

  1. Douglas, WY - Also known as "The Jackalope City." When Ed Herschler was governor of Wyoming, he proclaimed Douglas as the "City of the Jackalope." Douglas gives a tribute to the name at their yearly "Jackalope Days" in June, which is also the home of the State Fair Grounds.
  2. Laramie, WY - Back in 2009, Laramie hosted the "Jackalope Jump" for the Special Olympics. Money was raised when people ran into cold waters in Laramie. Quite refreshing and probably a bit cold.
  3. Sheridan, WY - Also raising money for the Special Olympics, 2015 found an event in Sheridan with a make-shift pool. It was pretty cold.
  4. Lander, WY - James Gore and Associates did a Jackalope Jump in a small, blow-up pool to help raise funds.
  5. Mystery - The Great Wyoming Jackalope hosts Ned Bundt, a "very special" agent with the Wyoming Department of Magical and Mythological Creatures, and takes you on a journey to connect culprits who may be tied into the mythological creature - the Jackalope!

Some people have even written songs about the Wyoming Jackalope. Listen to the song "Snaggle Tooth Jackalope" by Gary Small & the Coyote Bros. Happy hunting!
