Cheyenne residents will soon see higher sanitation rates.

After nearly two and a half hours of trash talk Monday night, the Cheyenne City Council voted 6 to 3 to increase solid waste fees.

The Governing Body was considering a proposal which would have hiked trash rates by 5% a year over the next five years, but Ward III Councilman Richard Johnson proposed a one-year, 8% increase.  The council passed that amendment by a 6 to 3 vote.

The proposal will raise a residential customer's bill by about $1.70 a month.

Council members Mike Luna, Jimmy Valdez and Annette Williams voted against the proposal.
