A spokesman for the Laramie County Sheriff's Department says local residents turned in over 300 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs at a prescription drug take back day on Saturday.

Gerry Luce says the department considers the event to have been a big success. He also says anyone with unwanted prescription drugs can still drop them off at the Sheriff's Department on Pioneer Avenue.

Luce says the idea behind the event is to safely dispose of prescription drugs in order to keep them away from children and people who would abuse the drugs. The local event was held in conjunction with National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. T

The Cheyenne Police Department held a similar event, and spokesman Officer Dan Long says that while he doesn't have any hard figures yet on the quantity of drugs police collected, he certainly considers the event to have been worthwhile. Long says people can turn in prescription drugs at the Police Department in a drop off box set up in the lobby during regular business hours.
