The Cheyenne Firefighters Charity Ball will be making a return for the first time since 2007! This charity ball dates back as far as the 1930’s and was traditionally held annually. Over recent years the ball has not been held.

With the organization of the Local 279 Auxiliary last year, the group of firefighter wives decided that the charity ball should make a return. Vice President of the Auxiliary, Heather Dyl, says “many of us were not around for the last of the firefighter dances, and we are very excited to be helping to honor our husbands while carrying on a great tradition.”

The upcoming Firefighters Charity Ball will be held at Little America on Friday, May 29th. All proceeds of the charity ball will be going to help local organizations. Those charities are Project Healing Waters, The Comea Shelter, as well as the Cheyenne Firefighter’s own Burnout Fund and Benevolent Fund.

The Cheyenne Firefighters Burnout Fund was created well over 50 years ago to help families that have been displaced by house fires in Cheyenne. The Benevolent Fund is a new charity organized by the Union only last month. It is an account that the firefighters have access to for their own medical or emotional support.

Organizer of the Firefighter’s Charity Ball and member of IAFF Local 279, Johnny Coonts says the excitement is rising. “The Cheyenne Firefighters are a proud bunch, and don’t do too many things to celebrate our own achievements.” Coonts continued “it’s a night that we can honor our own, particularly those who have retired.” Nearly 30 retirees of Cheyenne Fire and Rescue were invited. Spokesperson for Local 279, Derek Pollnow says that tickets are open to the public now, and donations for auction or either listed fund are still being accepted.
