David Settle/Townsquare Media

For only the second time in the history of the conference, the University of Wyoming plays hosts to the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Laramie today through Saturday at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.

The 2014 championships feature a total of seven men’s and 11 women’s teams competing over the next four days in 42 events. The defending champions are San Diego State on the women’s side and Air Force on the men’s side.

Wyoming track and field head coach Bryan Berryhill says,

“It’s always special when you get to host a championship. As we’ve said, to give these kids a chance to compete on their home track; their home throwing ring; is pretty special.”

UW Senior hurdler Taylor Gardner described the level of competition in town this weekend by saying, “I think what people need to realize is that this meet is huge. There are people in this conference that definitely do compete on a national level, and we may see in the Olympics someday.”

It starts with the women’s heptathlon and men’s decathlon today and tomorrow. The main part of the championships will begin Friday at 11 a.m. and finish on Saturday with events starting at noon.
